This was a privilege to be able to honor Mr. Bill with his first flight in a helicopter. You see, Mr. Bill is a personal friend of mine who I've known for 13 years now and we set out for the day to go to my firehouse for a Chief's "last day at the firehouse." It was a great time. After getting Mr. Bill situated with a platter, I asked him if I could get him a drink and to my surprise, he said, "how about a beer?" I couldn't believe it. Here's this 99 year old WWll veteran still putting them back. I can only imagine him in his prime drinking his veteran comrades under the table. So after the party, he wanted to take a trip down memory lane and drive through the old neighborhood. During our travels , we stopped by the neighborhood airport so I could show him where I was training for my private pilot's license. To my surprise, I found out they were doing tours so I rushed back outside and opened the passenger door and said, "come on Mr. Bill!" He said, "where are we going?" I said, "on that helicopter!" Oh you should've saw the smile on his face. He said, "you're joking me Joe!" I said nope! "Do you want to go?" and he said, sure and the rest is history. To think Mr. Bill worked on one of the first helicopters but never flown in one. Just goes to show you that age is just a number and dreams can come true at any point in one's life.
